What features should an exercise bike have?

The Flywheel

One of the essential components of any indoor bike is the flywheel. The flywheel is just one of the few moving parts that are moved by the pedals and they are the cranks, the drive wheel, and the drive belt.

We all know that the greater the mass of the flywheel, the greater the kinetic energy (rotational energy) with which the dead points are overcome when we move the pedals. This results in a better, harmonious concentric run and a gentler, faster turn, which makes the driving experience more natural.

For example, spinning bikes need to withstand more powerful training and higher rotations than a conventional exercise bike; they are accordingly equipped with a much higher flywheel mass.

Therefore, if you are planning to buy a spinning bike instead of an exercise bike, you need to make sure that the spinning wheel of the spinning bike is at least 16 kg. If the flywheel weighs 14 kg, you cannot expect to exercise with maximum loads, especially when pedaling in the upright position.

(But this rule doesn’t apply to some indoor bikes like for example is The Kaiser M3i indoor cycle, this sports gear comes with a light flywheel of 3.6 KG. If you want to know more about this excellent indoor cycle, you can read my full review here.)

Indoor exercise bikes that have a flywheel weighing 16, 20, 25, or more, usually cost around $ 1000 or more. In combination with high-quality drive components, this is sufficient for a smooth run.

The Braking System

The brake system is the part of the bicycle that slows down the spinning flywheel. The most common braking systems in indoor exercise bikes are drag brakes (friction brakes), magnetic brakes, induction, and fan brakes.

1. The Drag (Friction) Brake

This brake works either with one brake shoe that presses on the running surface of the flywheel from above or with two brake shoes that press against the side surfaces of the flywheel from the right and left.

The metal jaws are usually covered with either felt or leather. The pressure on the flywheel and thus the pedaling resistance can be changed manually via a rotary knob (control lever or tension knob).

The advantage of the felt plate brakes is that they provide very high pedal resistance compared to the magnetic brake. And the higher the resistance, the harder you have to pedal, and the more you sweat. However, they cause grinding noises on the brake and wear out over time.

2. Magnetic Brakes

The magnetic brake system works quietly and without wear. So here is used a magnet, the distance between the magnet and the flywheel can be changed by using an adjusting knob.

The smaller the distance between the magnet and the flywheel, the greater the braking effect. Magnetic brake systems are usually more expensive than grinding brakes, but they offer two major advantages: firstly because they work without contact, no friction, and no need for maintenance, and secondly, they work almost silently.

This type of brake system is equipped with a permanent magnet. The distance of the magnet from the flywheel can be changed as needed. The closer the magnet gets to the flywheel, the more it slows down the speed of the flywheel.

When the magnet touches the flywheel, it stops immediately; if the distance between the magnet and the flywheel is only a few millimeters then the braking effect is much less intense. Whit this type of brake, you can effectively slow down or stop the movement of the flywheel at your will.

3. Induction Brakes

Induction brakes or so-called eddy current brakes are similar to electric brakes for cars. The stationary bikes with induction brakes have a coil that generates electrical eddy currents that slow down the flywheel. This enables a precise, effective, and safe reduction of the flywheel speed.

4. Fan Brakes

There are also third types of brakes on indoor bikes, which are air brakes or so-called fan brakes. This type of bicycle uses a large fan wheel instead of a traditional flywheel. When you turn the pedal, air resistance is created. This type of braking system is also used to adjust the resistance when you train.

Type of Drive

For more direct power transmission from the pedals to the flywheel on the spinning and indoor exercise bikes, usually is used a rigid drive. Some of them have a freewheel that allows the bike to spin in both directions: forward and backward, while some exercise bikes do not have a freewheel. In principle, two different types of drives are used that bring the power from the pedals to the flywheel: the chain drive and the belt drive. These two types of driving systems have their advantages and disadvantages.

  • The chain drive requires regular maintenance such as oiling, greasing, or clamping to keep it running smoothly and produces loud noises during workouts.
  • The belt drive is maintenance-free and offers silent operation. In addition, the poly-V belt is maintenance-free. This type of drive system doesn’t require maintenance work such as oiling, greasing, or clamping is not necessary. The belt drive is clearly the better choice for training in your own home gym.

The Pedals

Indoor cycling and spinning sometimes put a lot of force on the pedals, especially when riding out of the saddle in an upright position and it can be a painful experience, especially when you slip off your pedal and fall. This can often happen on spinning bikes that do not offer a freewheeling, which securing the feet on the pedals is a must.

In order to avoid such accidents, you need to fasten or secure your pedal feet with straps or clamps with individual adjustments in width. By using these methods of securing feet to the pedals you will be allowed to wear normal sports shoes while cycling your indoor exercise bike.

Some manufacturers also equip their spinning bikes with combi pedals, which allow both mounting options to be chosen. This is extremely useful and is especially recommended in gyms where a large number of people with different foot widths and sizes are allowed to use the same stationary exercise bike for training.

Also, the cranks of spinning bikes and indoor bikes usually have a common pedal thread with a thread size of 9/16″. If this is the case, the pedals can easily be exchanged for other system pedals.

The Crank

The geometry of the crank has a significant impact on how exactly the riding experience on an indoor cycle corresponds to that of a bicycle. The most relevant dimensions are the crank length and Q-factor. The Q-factor is the distance between the outer surfaces of the two cranks. If the Q-factor is too high, knee problems can result. Ideally, it should roughly match the Q-factor of a bicycle. For road bikes and mountain bikes, it is usually between 150 and 190 mm.

The crank length is the distance from the center of the bottom bracket to the center of the pedal thread. Here, too, the size should ideally correspond to that of a bicycle, since this is the only way to train the muscles specifically for cycling. A good value is around 170 to 175 mm. If there is a desire to replace the crank arms, the bottom bracket spindle should have a square socket. This is the only way to make adjustments to crank length and Q-factor.

The Sitting Position

For any cycling enthusiasts, especially those who love to cycle on indoor cycling bikes possibility to adjust the range of the saddle and handlebars is one of the important criteria. This adjustment possibility allows the users to have the same sitting position on the indoor bike as they do on the racing bike or mountain bike.

The Saddle

The best indoor exercise bike is designed in mind to have a sporty sitting position for long dynamic endurance workouts. Because of that, almost always a racing or mountain bike saddle is installed on this type of bike.

The saddle should be shaped in such a way that nothing chafes or rubs, even during longer training sessions. The material of the saddle is also decisive for comfort. Leather saddles, for example, are only used on high-priced models.

However, the attachment for the saddle usually corresponds to that of a bicycle, so that your own saddle can be mounted at any time without any problems.

Adjustable Handlebars and Handlebar Attachment

In order to be able to use as many different grip options as possible and to be flexible in the sitting position, a specially shaped handlebar is recommended, which in the broadest sense is reminiscent of a combination of racing bike handlebars and triathlon handlebars. This allows you to vary between a stretched and upright posture as you like. You should be able to put your forearms down.

It’s no fun riding a bike that’s out of control. That’s why the stability of the handlebars and the handlebar attachment is important, as you often ride out of the saddle, especially when spinning, and extremely high forces can act on the handlebars and stem. Even during intensive training sessions, the handlebars must always convey a secure feeling and must not twist.

Covering the handlebars with high-quality foam is also a safety-related criterion. Even with sweaty hands, the material must ensure a firm, non-slip grip, as there is a risk of injury if you slip.

Resistance Levels and Wattage

Every indoor exercise bike offers the possibility of changing the pedaling resistance. The level of resistance can be continuous or you can manually change it while you are cycling. This gives you the option to choose the resistance level that is right for you. The higher the resistance, the harder you need to pedal. In order to enable a precise increase in workout performance, it is important to ensure that the resistance of the individual levels increases in small steps.

While some indoor bikes only display the calories burned according to the resistance, some indoor bikes indicate the output in watts. High-quality indoor models often offer 30 resistance levels with an increase of 5 watts per level. For hobby and health athletes, a maximum resistance of 250 watts is usually sufficient.

Training Programs

Some indoor exercise bikes are equipped with preset training programs. When it comes to training programs you need to know that there are two types, fixed and dynamic.

You have the choice between fixed and dynamic training programs. Fixed training programs are those that consist of a specific training time and fixed resistance – for example, 45 minutes at 12 watts. In a dynamic training program, the training parameters vary – for example, from 80 to 140 watts in 10-watt increments every 10 minutes. Interval training programs are often mentioned. Interval training programs are also often mentioned.

Whether the indoor bike should come with pre-set training programs or not each user will have to decide for themselves. A training program does not use settings that could not be set manually. It is therefore a comfort function that facilitates the operation of the indoor bike.

If you decide to buy an indoor bike with training programs, you need to ensure that pre-installed programs are both fixed and dynamic as this adds real value to each user.

The Weight and Body Size

If you want to adopt a good sitting position on the indoor bike and avoid heavy strain on the joints, it is important that the training device fits the height of the person exercising. Most models are suitable for people with a height between 1.60 and 2 meters. Many manufacturers do not specify the height for which their indoor bikes are suitable.

In addition to body size, it is important to pay attention to body weight. It is important that your own body weight does not exceed the load capacity of the indoor exercise bike. As far as the load capacity is concerned, there are big differences between the individual models, from 80 to 150 kilograms.

Digital Display

The digital display is a must-have feature when it comes to buying an indoor bike. It is recommended that the digital display be large enough so that you can easily read the important parameters such as movement, calorie consumption, watt performance display, time, and other information.
